  • Ta So Kare – Ka Wa Tare

3000 pictures recording the setting sun shown in sequence on building facades overnight until the sunrise. – Megumi Matsubara’s set of photography shown as Assistant’s public installation at: ROPPONGI ART NIGHT *Ta so kare / Ka wa tare means “Who is there?” in classical Japanese, each implying the time of sunsetting / sunrising twilight. It derives from the feeling when you are in the room, having a familiar silhouette at the door walking to you at sunset or leaving you at sunrise, but the light makes it difficult to recognise the face. The public installation implies the original meaning of the names of two countries Morocco where the photographs were taken,… Continue reading

  • March Meeting 2013

Blindness & Dreams What do you see when you close your eyes? – Megumi Matsubara will introduce a series of projects developed in Morocco in 2012 that are grounded in the themes of blindness and dreams. Matsubara will discuss the importance of internal and external sight – what we can see beyond the limits of our vision. She will explore the dichotomy between blindness and sight posed within the context of Arabic culture, particularly through spatiality – houses detached from the external world yet open to the sky from within, and notions that describe external and internal visions simultaneously. The presentation will be also based on Matsubara’s previous conversations with art… Continue reading

This book contains Matsubara’s photographic work 《My Imaginary Lagos》 and text 《Anchor, Shoes, and Sleep》. Limited to 500 copies, printed in Tangier, Morocco in June 2012. Hand-numbered on the last page. – “Presence/absence” is a recurring discourse in Matsubara’s work. What tells you with certainty that something really exists? Does the act of documentation make it so? Matsubara’s “My Imaginary Lagos” raised these questions. Her photographic oeuvre, made before visiting the city, juxtaposed images of Lagos taken by an acquaintance with Matsubara’s own images of other places. Was this not in fact Lagos as an ‘Invisible City?’ Beyond presenting the uncertainty of documentation, she had revealed the presence of her ‘imagined’ Lagos.… Continue reading

  • RÊVEURS RÊVE RÊVES

RÊVEURS RÊVE RÊVES / DREAMERS DREAM DREAMS – Did you dream last night? This is the question that I asked the seven Moroccan children who are blind. With this question, I was once rejected. With the same question, another time I was given a key to enter their secretive worlds. They are studying English and computers. I joined their classes to know them. While talking, our eyes never meet. We constantly touch each other to confirm our mutual presence. In one of the first English classes in my childhood, there was a phrase in a text book, “I touch you. You touch me.” Kids were laughing when they read… Continue reading

Continue reading

The digital world of the past was perhaps viewed as virtual reality, an- other world, outside of the real world. Today, through seamless connections to the world- wide network, the digital world surpasses the space-time continuum, multiplies “here and now”, and is starting to create an augmented realistic world physically and mentally. The theme of this exhibition is ‘Augmented Reality’. The title of the event is a fusion of two languages. “Wonderland” meaning “illusion”, “fiction”, “mysterious… Continue reading

  • Sociological Lunches | Nairobi

A series of Sociological Lunch conversations between five Nairobians and Megumi Matsubara was published on Another Africa. – ‘Sociological Lunch‘ is a series of lunch sessions first initiated by artist Megumi Matsubara in Tokyo, 2008. It is an artist’s simple gesture to draw out, and on, personal stories from a given city and its inhabitants; a device to bring specificity to an urban landscape. Through a casual meeting about 90 minutes in length, set over the course of a meal she invites individuals to share their personal experiences and thoughts on their city. The participants, people  whom she may know or as in this case, people introduced to her through her personal network. Through… Continue reading
